Why Hire a Travel Agent? Benefits Beyond Just Booking
Anyone can book a vacation. Open a browser, pick a resort with pretty pictures, enter a credit card, done. So why would you hand that over to someone else?
I asked myself that question before I became a travel advisor in January 2025. My honest answer is that my family has booked plenty of trips on our own, and we've made the mistakes. I started this business because I don't want other families spending their hard-earned vacation fixing problems that could have been avoided.
Booking is the easy part. Here's what happens beyond it.
"Won't a travel agent cost me more?"
This is the first question most people ask, and the answer usually surprises them: for most trips, I don't charge a planning fee at all. I'm paid by the vacation provider (the resort, cruise line, or tour company) out of their end. You pay what you'd pay booking yourself.
Often you get more. Because of my relationships with providers, my clients can receive perks like resort credit that aren't available when you book on your own. Same trip, same price, with extras attached.
The one exception is large group trips, which take significantly more coordination. For those, a planning fee may apply, and I'll always tell you up front.
I've walked the property. The website photographer hasn't lied to you, but they haven't told you everything either.
I've seen too many families arrive at a resort that looked stunning online and turned out to be dated, crowded, or a poor fit for their kids. Photos are marketing. They show the best angle on the best day.
That's why I personally tour and inspect almost every destination and hotel I recommend. This year alone, my site visits include the premier hotels at Orlando's major theme park resorts (several trips), Universal Orlando, Palace Resorts in Cancun, Secrets Puerto Los Cabos, Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas, and the Grand Moon Palace in Punta Cana.
When I recommend a room, I'm not guessing from a brochure. I know which buildings are a long walk from the pool, which rooms are worth the upgrade, and which resort fits a family with toddlers versus one with teenagers.
The work you never see
Once you book, my job is just getting started. Between booking day and departure day, I stay in constant contact with your vacation provider. I update your personal information, process your payments, and handle changes. If you decide halfway through planning that you'd rather wake up to the ocean than the garden, I'm the one who makes the call to move you to a beachfront room.
I also keep watching after you've booked. Providers release new deals and promotions all the time, and if one comes along that could save you money, I go after it. Most people who book themselves never check again once the confirmation email arrives. I do.
A real example: a group trip to Mexico
I recently planned a group trip to Mexico for a dental practice. Group travel multiplies every detail: more flights, more passports, more rooms, more chances for something to fall through the cracks.
I booked all of their air travel and made sure every traveler's passport information was correct with the airline, because one typo can mean someone doesn't board. I arranged their transportation from the airport to the resort so no one was haggling with drivers after a long travel day.
Then I flew down a day early. I checked that their rooms were in order before they arrived so check-in would be smooth. I set up their arrival-day cocktail party, and when they walked in, each person was greeted with custom gifts and hats made for their trip. They got to start their vacation on vacation, not in a lobby line.
That's what "beyond booking" looks like.
You're not alone while you're away
When my clients travel, I'm tracking them. I confirm they've checked in as scheduled, and I reach out to each one by text or email to remind them that if anything comes up, they can contact me directly.
That matters. When something goes sideways on a trip, the difference between texting someone who knows your reservation and sitting on hold with a 1-800 number is the difference between a hiccup and a lost afternoon.
Who I'm not the right fit for
I'll be straight with you: if you're mainly looking for the cheapest plane ticket, I'm not your person. I rarely book air travel on its own. The exception is large groups, where group air rates can bring real savings.
Where I add the most value is the whole experience: choosing the right resort, cruise, or theme park stay, getting the details right, catching the extras, and making sure your family can relax from the moment you arrive.
